I was thinking about it. I'd definitely prefer a crossbow to a regular bow, but there seem to be very few about.

I mught just go along in October and take a look, but as Im not an expert (in any way !) I thought I'd call in the experts (you guys !)

I should point out that the bolts are quite expensive and do break quite easily

On the other hand if you get the fibre-glass shafted bolts (and I would highly recommend you do!) then they are more durable than any arrows (shorter length = less chance of people treading on them which is the major cause of arrow death) and as a crossbowman you generally shoot less in a fight than an archer. As Viosh I used to carry around 6-8 bolts and very rarely got through them in an encounter. You'll find party members get quite adept at lobbing them back to you as they move around the fight.

Crossbows are quite close range but are ideal for annoying casters and healers. . wait until they get a line into their vocals and shoot them. Reload. . rinse, repeat. Highly entertaining

thanks everyone

I guess the rules on draw-strength go out the window, but are there any common rules on which crossbows are safe to use ?

You can measure a crossbow pull strength in exactly the same way as a regular bow. The difference is with a regular bow that you can pull the bow back less to reduce poundage where-as you have no such choice with a crossbow. On the other hand the short prods of a cross-bow (and the LARP bungee style) have less "cast" than a bow and less string speed which usually results in considerably reduced range and missile speed so it's kind of swings and roundabouts.

I'd recommend getting the seller to test-fire a crossbow at you from various ranges and get a feel for it on the recieving end. If you are a bit more "rough and tumble" than most (some of us don't mind a beating as much as others) then try the same test on someone more breakable. . a girlfriend or wife perhaps? If after getting shot a few times you are in pain, the bow's probably too strong

And if you try a bow with a pound pull that's too strong on your other half then you'll know because you'll be in pain in that case too.

I suppose shooting crossbows at other people's wives/girlfriends would be bad ?

Thought so.
