RabbitKins 4 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Having been to a few events now, I think it is time for me and James (Robyn) to start thinking about how we want our characters to progress.
Sadly, Sky made the fatal error of informing me that animal-kin characters exist in Orin Rakatha. I wondered if it is too late to change a few details about Misha (or transfer my points to a suspiciously similar character) who is a rabbit- (or hare-)kin. She would still be a scout, and since I’m in need of a blunt weapon I might consider getting a camp shovel or similar – good for a digging creature!
Is it too late to do that? What points table would I need to use? Would being a –kin have any substantial effect on her backstory?
I might also change Misha’s name to make it sound more Orin Rakathery. “Mishkah” or similar?
Thanks in advance!

Your backstory is, as always, your own but it would be worth picking up with Pete Sutton regarding "kin" characters. There are some tribal race that might suit but I've not actually ever met Rabbit-kin. That said Orin Rakatha does seem to be a melting pot of planar travelers to it's possible to be from somewhere that suits you (Hare-kin for example _may_ have come from Akari which is a japanese/chinese inspired oriental place where such fetishes. . I mean concepts. . originate). It wouldn't be to inconceivable that your original form (human) was a disguise/glamour hiding your hare-kin appearance . . just turn up explain to anyone who met you before why you appeared in disguise and you're done. If you wanted to go whole hog take "disguise" skill as your first scouty ability and you'd be able to switch back and forth between human and 'kin identities legitimately

In terms of points tables again this is something of a personal choice. The Orc and Elf tables are generally governed by the base nature of the race. . . so if you picture your "kin" as being principally a physical entity, strong and tough but lacking in the more mental disciplines then Orc is probably the table to choose (similar races include Dwarfs, Duergar, Orcs, Trolls etc.). If the Kin are fast, fragile and magically inclined then go elf (also used by Sprites, pixies, elementals and drow). If not stick to Human. Bear in mind using the Orc/Elf tables does require make-up/voices/prosthetics etc. . .

On the name thing I think Misha is a perfectly decent name. . . not sure why you think it isn't "Orin Rakathery" enough where we have names ranging from Snotgrub Fartypants through to Brother John

Final point. . Hare-Kin. . . surely Hamsterkin?

I thought "Disguise" had been removed from the system. There was certainly some In-Character restriction put on it's use, wasn't there?

For points-juggling, as you're new, I don't think anyone would mind you having a go at a few different concepts till you find one your happy with. We're all here to have fun, after all: what's the fun in playing something you don't enjoy! Both my characters have been through a couple of tweaks - some minor - some less so.

That said, I'm not a ref, so please don't take my word for it

RabbitKin eh? For some reason I can't stop thinking of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

@ Shuan Haha, I KNEW someone was going to bring that up! Maybe one day I’ll have a Christmas-only hamster-kin just to satisfy my tormentors!
Thanks for the information – I guess while Misha is dumb, she is dumb within the boundaries of human intelligence, so I’ll stick with using the human stats? I also really like the disguise idea – means I could test out being a –kin, and if I hate it, then sike! The –kin form was the disguise all along, I’m just a human after all!
So long as the name doesn’t seem out of place, I’ll keep it.
Thanks very much for the help, and I’ll send a message to Pete to ensure any back story will be in keeping with everyone else...!
@ Phil I happen to be a rather big fan of that bunny! Maybe she’s a distant cousin of Misha’s...!

Hmm not sure about the disguise thing Phil. . maybe best going with a one off "reveal" then rather than rely on that skill if it doesn't exist (can you tell I don't play scouts!)

Yes, looks like it was an IC thing:

www.heroquest-larp.co.uk/forums.html?fun...;catid=2&id=7650

But given that Disguise is a status skill, I wouldn't worry about spending the status just to use the skill once, as it were. There's more interesting / useful things to spend the status on, especially in the early stages.

As an aside, I'd say the key to playing a scout (which IMO is by FAR and AWAY the best class ) is early survival. They're pretty fragile to begin with, but once you get past 640 points they really start to kick off...

As I said, if you just want to experiment with costume/stats I don't think anyone would mind if there wasn't a rock-solid IC reason, as long as you didn't flip back and forth every event. The only problem with completely restarting fresh is that you would sort of have to "forget" any exist IC relationships you'd developed. Mutual back-story and sessions of drunken nostalgia being a perfect way to spend downtime in the wee small hours and not to be missed.

That should do it Iain. Well done!

I'm confident that tweaking your character would be fully understood and supported by the 'powers that be' (though as mentioned, not frequently).

Look at Vallan, he's been many things in his time (including the wearing of pink dresses)! What a weirdo!

The important thing is that you do what you want and enjoy yourself.

agreed!!! having fun is most important, plus I gotta say it I find the rabbit-kin scout awsom and funney

(sneak sneak ---bush- all the last sentry saw was a long pair of white ears and the moving of the bush moving right at him/her)

power three shovel does spring up some ideas.......

anyway It cant be a worse idea than my slayer character, still cant find a decent ginger Mohawk any where??? oh and don't worry he shant be top less for those with a weak stomach, I certantly wouldn't do a mike barley on ye all lol

When I started my cat-kin it seemed a great idea at the time but I decided to completely respond my points and go human evil preist. I still have the mask for a future character though. So as said above this early in I don't think you'll be told you can't respond if you wish too, however, if your staying with the same stats but just being a different race (kin of some kid as it were) then I think the disguise idea is quite good!
I think if you didn't want to take it as one of your first status spends though you might be able to talk to Pete about finding an IC way of a disguise wearing off or a glamour disappearing the longer you spend on Orin Rakatha perhaps.
There's lots of people that could help come up with IC reasons if you happen to struggle or wonder.
If you decide to go down the furry race route I'd think carefully about what kit/prosthetics you use!
Some people are more than happy to wear make up, prosthetics or masks all weekend, some just find its not for them. Plus you'd need something comfortable that isn't going to fall off in a bush whilst scouting.
You did say you both were going to try ministering so that will give you more of an idea about full face masks and make up
