Hi All,
this is off-topic from HQ, but i know many of you are war gamers. I have started to develop a Table Top version of Cimmerian Space that focuses more on Fleet Battles.

If you are interested i have started a blog to track the development of the game, and will be uploading playtest videos soon.

I hoping to get Russ Charles (AKA Monty, and Flint) of Element Miniatures and Clockwork Goblin to sculpt the ships. (If you havent seen his work you really should he is amazing!) We are talking about using magnets for rotating turrets!

Later on we will be sending out play test packs for you to try too.

Love the idea of the magnetised turrets. . I'm a big fan of magnetising models (lots of my 40k stuff is starting to get that treatment).

I shall keep an eye on this one, a decent space battle game could be a nice addition to the gaming stack.

You've got some tough competition for a space battle miniature game.

* Silent Death is awesome but is more for smaller, fighter based engagements.
* Battle Fleet Gothic is great but has mostly become unsupported like many of GW's games.
* Full Thrust is pretty cool too, I've got a fleet for that and it was very popular at my club a way back. GZG do the miniatures.
* Star Fleet Battles is also there for the Trekkies.

Also be aware that your target audience will be old geezers like me. "Naval" warfare, which space battles are, only appeals to older gamers.
(which is why the incredibly awesome Man O'war mostly died off although it has a bit of a cult following still)

I haven't tried Full Thrust, but as you mentioned allot of these games are no longer in production, or on a slightly smaller scale.

My aim is to keep some of the visual representation from Man O'War, combined with a modern rule system, and some cool miniature by Russ. Modernization will increase the audience, but older gamers have cash too! I think Man O'war died during GW cull of games when they moved to 3 game only core.

If you guys are up for it i am looking for play testers to help along the way.

I'm happy to playtest (I shall drag Matt D. into it too as he is local to me and we play fairly regularly when he's allowed out ) drawing parrells to Man O War will always get me keen. Although I've not managed to get around to painting them all yet I have put together a reasonable collection of Man O war stuff over the past few months and it remains one of my favourite ever games.

It would be great to see Matt D. too!

I have a hug Man o war fleet i got of e-bay!

So i take it that means you think its worth the table space to have cards that visually represent your ship?

here is are my two early concepts.
The first is man o war like, and not very developed:

and the second has a central "hub" you doc cards around :

I got some Neobidium magnets today and they are both tiny and strong!

And the Hybrid result, where you can place a weapon card on the main template. This is our smallest ship, with a card of 10cm by 10cm (just a bit smaller than a War Galley card).

Still needs some work on icons, but you get the idea.

I personally like the card system Man O'War uses but I know some who dislike it. The downside of it is that even with relatively small fleets you need a lot of space (generally a separate table) for the cards. This is fine if you play games at a club but will be a problem for people trying to play games on their dining room table.

You could always go down the Warmachine route and have cards that fit into the standard plastic sheaths/sheets and use whiteboard markers to cross out damage/locations etc. That system works REALLY well and takes much less space.

Hmmmm sounds interesting i will have to check out War Machine. I know what you are saying about table space, and much of the space on the card is taken up by space for damage counters.

Ok so i took a look at War Machine, and have ordered some plastic card covers to experiment with. I did a test to see if there was enough room on a single playing card

This one would require a half size weapon cards also, so saves some space.

Will have to do some play testing and see which variant wins out!
