Read/Write Runes? 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 1
Been going through the rule book and can't find what this skill actually gives you...

I assume if we encountered runes on a mission that needed "reading" this skills could be used to understand them. What about the "write"part?

Hi Leo

It is assumed that everyone can read and write Common (English) although should you wish to say that your character can't read, that is of course, up to you.

Where this skill comes in is if you want to be able to read and write a specific set of special runes - most commonly Magic and Power. You take the skill once for each set.

So, this skill would give you the ability to read and cast spells or invocations on pre-written scrolls. It's also (I think) a prerequisite for the high level ability write Magic/Power Scrolls, which allows the character to write a spell onto a scroll for casting later, either by themselves, or another with the ability to read and write that set. (A good example of this is "Mass Heal" - a scroll is really the only way to cast this during combat - don't leave home without one folks!)

Taking this skill also allows you to keep a "cheat sheet" of the runes, if you're using them to translate into Common (there are those in the group who don't need the sheet and actually know the runes, but they're just geeks.)

Does that make sense?

Phil.

I was doing this on the weekend as Kudos.

You can rewrite a scroll once each day with something your character, or one of the characters in your group know if they have the skill.
Certain events dependant on circumstances you can get someone from a guild you belong to to write the scroll pre the event but that is the refs choice.

Wouldn't recommend it as something to get as a skill early on as scroll paper costs 100gest per sheet.

Writing scrolls certainly isn't useful early on (particularly as a warrior who won't have any spells or invocations to write) however being able to read runes so you can use other peoples scrolls can sometimes be very helpful.

Thanks all. I think it makes sense now.

Without the skill I wouldn't be able to read scrolls given to me by other members of the team right? I had a couple of points spare that I couldn't fit anywhere else so picked this up. Being able to accept and use scrolls from others would be useful (even if I can't write my own).
