Ask away,

We're (mostly) a friendly bunch

You'll usually find that there isn't a shortage of people willing to answer questions or even more so, express an opinion!

Cheers,

Hi Richy
As fraser says there are plenty of people here who are happy to answer any questions you may have about the in and out of both LARP and heroquest, so feel free to post away!

cheers guys

well my main question is, does larping/heroquest mostly involve fighting or is it more of an acting thing?

i ask this as the only thing iv seen of larping is from the film "role models" and i thought yeah that looks fun to do, but i get a feeling that larping isnt exactly how "role models" portrays it

role models isnt like the real thing. were not geeky. we just their to have a laugh. heroquest is in my oppinion quite a serious larp. we have a laugh but we do treat been ic seriously.

the best thing to do is come and play but yes we do a fair bit of fighting as well as been the character.

ahh okay,

well as acting goes, i suck due to mental illnesses
which is why i was hoping it involved more fighting than acting

is acting something i will need to take part in larping?

also what is the difference between larping and heroquest?

cheers

LARPing is a term that covers lots of different games within the hobby. Heroquest is one of many systems that runs LARP games so they aren't different per se HQ is part of LARP.

In terms of the amount of fighting Heroquest is probably one of the highest combat systems currently running in the UK and there are typically numerous opportunities to fight throughout the day (rule of thumb is about 1 fight/potential fight every 30-45 minutes I'd say).

With regards to acting it depends what you mean. There are no lines to learn and no-one is going to critique your performance. What is involved is playing a character and joining in with the shared experience of not being "Joe Bloggs, IT manager from London" but "Illia, a Fire Mage from Fortunes Keep" and keeping your interactions with players and monsters In Character which pretty much boils down to not talking about East-enders during Time In (when the game is running) and reacting how your character would react to any given situation.

As you define your own character you can chose to behave in any way you chose, so if you are not confident you may chose to play a character who is also not confident in dealing with people and is therefore shy. Which may help to gently ease you in and allow you to experience things with a good In Character reason to remove yourself from situations you find uncomfortable.

Thanks Shaun
you pretty much answered the majority of things i needed to know

i suppose i will have to give LARPing a try to see if its for me

where do i go from here then?

also can you participate in LARPing even if you dont want to do any fighting? and if so what is there to do?
i ask this because i have asked my gf to come along (when/if i do start) and sees not a fighting fan, so was just wondering if there is any point

finally is there any age restrictions?

cheers

Hi Richy,
The next step is to have a look at the events page and find and event on a date/location which is good for you and get in touch with Paul Matthews the office number is on the contacts page and he will clarify anything you need to know and give you a welcome to the club! Feel free to ask him anything, his motto is the only daft question is one that isn't asked!
Most of the things you need to bring with you are under one of the sections in the 'about' section of the website.

As to age restictions-
No person under 16 years of age will be allowed to attend an event unless they are accompanied by their parent or guardian. People under 16 years of age are not permitted to participate in any form of LRP combat.
Individuals between 16 and 18 years of age are required to submit a Waiver form, signed by their parent or guardian, prior to attending any event.

As to your GF coming along, but not wanting to participate in fights, in my experence that is not generally a problem, but best to check with Paul.

The other thing is just keep an eye on the forums and if there are any other bits and bobs you want to know, just post away, we are a freindly bunch!
Cheers
Alex

cheers

i shall get in touch with him then
what would be the best type of event to attend for my first? i take it, it would be an adventure weekend rather than a heroquest?

im 20 so im okay but my brother that wants to come aswel is 16 so he will need the form

as for my gf, yeah i talk to paul

all my other further question are about the fighting system, where is the best place to ask about that?

cheers
