You will pick up a personal style of fighting that suits you as early as the end of your first event. There are, however, general safety rules that all of the combatants try to adhere to at all times.
The weapons are carbon fibre innards surrounded by latex, they are light and you can get a good thwack going with them. They are also surprisingly heavy when you're on the receiving end, so it is common courtesy from both monsters and players to "pull your blows"....similar to how someone might pull a punch (as opposed to striking through the target).
No Stabbing or thrusting with the weapons. This is a health and safety issue that is observed by both sides. There simply is not enough latex at the point of the weapon to safely cushion a stabbing blow. Some systems allow specially made stabbing weapons, HQ doesn't. you get cracked in the ribs with a pole of carbon fibre you WILL know about it hehe.
Try not to aim for the head or concentrate on specific body parts repeatedly. The head one should be self explanetary as, even though the weapons are latex based and don't hurt too much, they still CAN do a fair amount of damage if caught in the wrong place. ( i personally had to replace 6 of my piercings a couple of events ago due to accidental headshots and trust me it hurt like buggery ).
That said sometimes accidents do happen and courtesy usually takes over for a few seconds with someone mumbling under their breath if the other person is ok and apologising aswell.
Targetting the same continual body parts, or "drum rolling". i was taught when i started that after a hit you were supposed to target a different limb...in the heat of battle sometimes this isn't possible, variation is the key to a good fight. the more you enjoy it, the more the other person will enjoy it, sometimes it can lead to a nice long spar with feigns, dodging...other times...you'll just get the hell ganked out of you

I'm not going to attempt to describe the magic side of combat, so i will leave that to one of the veterans. Perhaps it is something we can entice you to come down and try first hand because, as they say, on the job training is so much better.....

i suggest a weekend adventure as they're A) Cheapest shortest C) more people will be on it than the usual events.

to be quite honest you want to find out if you enjoy it first, you also need to be aware it is physical and occassionally nc's do get hit. dont know what the rules for nc are to be honest.

Fighting as described is something you pick up you may want to be the type of person who uses sword and big shield like a tank, you may want to be dextrous with a buckler and rapier, or even use two one hand weapons or even one, one handed weapon its up to you to find where you are most comfortable. your the one A) carrying it, fighting with it C) relying on it to keep the character alive. so its up to you to find out. it took me a while to work out a personal style of fighting but generally talking to other players will help. heroquest is a team game so you will need to work with them to stay alive and they will need to rely on you to stay alive. Thusly you will learn and be allowed to make mistakes with others there as a barrier to stop things going wrong. HEHE

read through the website it should help.

yes no real reenactment weapons, apart from that usually its common sense alex makes weapons and sells em very very nice ones trust me.

play play play the first one if you can, get to feel the magic of an event before seeing behind the scenes. what would you rather do first see the show or be the one behind the curtain knowing all the surprises all the shocks when you can have the magic of the show first.

monstering will teach you system rules i find but the real magic of larp lies in the playing.

nope the membership schemes just mean paying in monthly installments instead of just paying on event.
