How did you get into LRP / come across HeroQuest? 3 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 26
Only a few weeks now til the first dungeon of the year!
A few questions to those who are happy to answer...

Was HQ your first live role-playing experience?
If not, how did you get into LRP?

And how did you come across Heroquest?

My first LARP experience was at Treasure Trap when I was 13, but that was the only time I went there.

After that it was at Labyrinth when I was about 15. Did this for a couple of years until we met SFB who was reffing one of our adventures. He was just starting HQ at the time so we went along. Didn't go back to Labyrinth after that.

Did HQ for maybe a couple of years and then stopped LARP for about 20 years or so.

Came back in late 2005 after finding the HQ website on the interwebs....

I started with Flights of Fantasy, A Gloucestershire based system, after I met a few people socially who already did it. Some random bloke called Rob also did it, so when it ended as a system (after a fair few years) and the 'follow on' system run by a few players not willing to give it up also ended, I looked around for somewhere new.

And being a wuss, I picked the one where I knew at least someone (Rob/Jenny/Pat for starters).

HQ was also the closest to the old FoF system, which represented every skill with a direct skill level, increasable via xp. Lots of differences, but the closest and (being higher hit) most likely to fit the 'fun' aspect (despite some enjoyable social aspects, I'm not a fan of low hit systems at all).

So - now I'm here bimbling along and surprisingly hardly even hitting things (when playing).

Thinking about ti, it's worrying to think that it all started a good 20+ years ago now.... EEK!

HQ was my first system and I was persuaded to do a 3hr event at the indoor site in 1988. I had a 5 year break in the mid 90's and have been coming ever since.

The lads had been doing larp for years and running their own system but I was never very interedted aside from helping make kit and repair weapons for them (and patch them all up when they got home as they were all rather violent lol)
They gave that up and nothing was spoken about for years till tom came across the HQ website and put it to ant that they give it ago. Then me and ant split up and when we got back together we agreed wed take an intrest in each others hobbies. So drunkenly on xmas day 2011 I signed up for what I thought was a 3 day event. That turned out to be april 2012 5 day event. That was the first time I ever larped and was hit with the bug straight away.
Now I try and get to HQ when ever I can.
Due to us three attending HQ its made some of the old manticore and emannon (the old systems) crew want to restart the old system up here. So there maybe a possibility I'll be attending and event there too.

My folks drove me down to Labyrinthe for our birthday (12th probably) but I can't for the life of me remember how we found out about it. . probably some gaming magazine maybe Dragon Mag?

Then our maths teacher, who used to play HQ, organised SFB (along with Alex White and Barry among other volunteers) to come and run a day event as part of our schools "activity days". After a few years of doing that once a year I eventually came to monster the pre- for the Chosen HQ and played the Halloween theme the same year. . . been coming ever since pretty much. . .

A school friend of mine introduced me to a system called Manticore back in 1994, spent many evenings making gaff tape weapons and sewing together what bits of material I could get hold off to make character kit. Was there for 3 years before moving on to Emanon (No name Backwards) Where I spent the next 10ish years and had a hand in producing kit for the certain monsters and finally moved up to be able to afford to get Latex weapons.
I discovered HQ from looking online, then started coming down in July 2011 after e-mailing Paul a few times.

Spookily, it all seems to come back to Labyrinth. Started there whilst still at school (maybe 15/16) and went for a year or so but not religiously.

After that got persuaded to try HQ with Rob Carver, Steve Barnes, Steve True and Colin Cotter and there met the Bristol crew. Did that for a good few years but got fed up with it eventually and took a break for about 10 years.

Not done any other system as I really like the high fantasy/high hit style of game plus the epic back story (some of which I vaguely remember - should have made more notes!), plus whenever I talk to other people about other systems they all sound a bit wishy-washy or cliquey.

HQ rocks.

PS, interestingly there's a guy in my local gaming group who claimed he tried to contact HQ a number of times with no luck. This was a while ago now though.

Rich, Tim, Russ and I first came to HQ at around 15 years old, I think because of a magazine advert. First game was monstering at the indoor site for me, though a couple of us played a 3 hour, though I can remember not being able to because I couldn't afford a 3 hour!

I think our second game was an 8 hour at symonds yat. Another friend, John, came with us. I remember his mum was due to give us a lift home from the Little Chef, and we made the mistake of taking the 8pm projected finish literally. I think it was around midnight when we finally crawled out of Druid's cave. She got so worried waiting for us that she called the police who phoned SFB!

We switched to another Bristol based club (via Pete Sutton) from around 1993-1999. The system was based on HQ, I loved the fights but really missed HQs rich back story. When that fizzled out I thought I was a retired LRPer.

We thought we'd retry HQ, really as a one-off around 2003, after a 10 year break, and didn't look back.
