You should aim for a pull of approx 30bs @ 28" draw perhaps even lighter to be on the safe side if you intend to take it any of the larger fest systems who will ban you from using it if it is heavier than this.

Saying that safe bow use really is down to the user. Pat (TaFKaRM on this forum) used to use a much heavier pull bow than that perfectly safely as he knew what he was doing. Even moreso than a melee weapon safe bow use is down to the user than the bow itself.

Personally I don't like longbows or "flatbows" and perfer to use recurve bows in the style of mongol horse archers. The nicest shooting bow I have ever owned was a "Nimrod" from the following site: www.recurvebowshop.com/hungarian+recurve+bows.htm however the string-points were a little fragile and I ended up breaking it.

Currently I use a "traditional hunter" from Quicks archery. Available in a selection of pull strengths it's a nice quick bow but does take some getting used to as it doesn't have an arrow rest or or set nock-point relying instead of you shooting off your thumb or the top of your hand depending on the style you use.

Cross-bows. . . not that easy to get hold of anymore although there was someone on the Rule7 forums who was considering starting manufactuing some again. forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic90171-32-1.aspx

Honestly in HQ I wouldn't recommend a crossbow as a primary weapon due to the lack of range (although the possibilities of a mage/acolyte using the "cast through bow" skills are intriguing) and slow-ish rate of fire.

Whichever way you go I would recommened the new "IDV" style arrows. They are manufactured in Germany and are generally (at least in my opinion) better than the more traditional LRP arrows as they fly better (and accuracy = safety provided you know what you are doing).

Cheers
