I think what Darrell objects to is the fact that you can learn OOC stuff that you couldn't possibly know - one that springs to mind is the conversation between Vere and Agoth for the May one or Bael's soliloquy for Black Orc Down not the fact that we market events so its just a case of style & content....

I think the May HQ one gives a good idea/taster for the event but does not reveal any OOC info? so its not all the event marketing thats at fault?

We can rethink the ones for later in the year and adapt the marketing

That's right, Pete.

If it's a case where revealing that sort of thing is important for marketing purposes, then I'm all for it. It's a business, after all, and it's in everyone's best interests that it succeeds...

And yes, I do think that the brief for the May HQ is just fine. It gives people the idea that there might be the opportunity to play some fun game IC, and that's bait enough!

Best,

Darrell

I actually rather like the new briefs. They are a bit more inspiring than 'mid level 66 hour'. I imagine as a 'customer' (if i can use that word) they will help you choose the right event for you.

You could always include a disclaimer type thing
i.e. - "builds on the previous event in the series, the alliance may change the brief in the field according previous sucesses/failures"

As always it's good to hear peoples views and we are certainly happy to modify these things and change them where necessary. It's a new thing we are trying out and I will have a look at the future event descriptions before posting them to try and ensure the assumptions and OOC information gained is minimised.

I like the idea of a disclaimer. As Shaun said the Alliance will plan and I quite like the idea of starting an event with "Well we failed to get the bridge established as we hoped so your new mission is to retrieve the bodies of our fallen adventurers"!

I like Craig actually really enjoy the flavour text. The quick "scene" of Bael behind enemy lines is brilliant and demonstrates far more tangibly the feel of the event than could be achieved by OOC descriptions. Also in this Bael is clearly communicating with someone so there is a route for the information to have made it to the players.

The stuff with the Vere may be a little more troubling however whats to say this couldn't have been a vision recieved by the white seers (or dark seers, or any other weird alliance member) which has been included as part of Alliances IC brief?

I'm all for the new briefs although since I've already booked to play most of them I guess I'm not your target market

The Valley pot smoker, perhaps?

Personally i was really impressed by the event descriptions, it made me want to press the Book Now button!

I think they were written well enough that a heroquest outsider - read member of the general public - could also be enticed.

Yes Refs obviously dont want to give the game away. This is fantasy, so why not allow some imagination.

only the old lags of the system will remember the fully negative experiences of getting to the end of an event having failed in your mission as well as in the past events were much more adverserial

Being an "old(ish) lag" I think that's what has been lost in HQ for me and why I've kind of given it up, except for B Ops and a few other specials. In the past I didn't find the experience "fully negative" just damn hard but a real challenge.

I may be alone in this but I don't want to head out with the expectation that we'll nearly always succeed I would rather fail many more missions or have many more chances to fail (goodness knows I've tried ) for me it gives a much more real sense of achievement when you do succeed against many odds, rather than just head out for another walk in the park.

I think in the past referees gave parties much more credit than they should have, not taking into account the collective stupidity principle (not being dispariging here just communicating an observation that you get a group of people who individually are intelligent and put them together and collectively they're stupid) plus the whole in-character out of character thinking dichotomy.

The chance of failure was much higher in the past, in fact I'd argue that players were more likely to fail than succeed on some missions.

I'm happy to go for 50/50 chance of success or fail on my events with real consequences if people want that from an event

Sounds good to me. I also like the idea that failure is a real option. Constant victory is just as tedious as constant defeat because it ultimately becomes unsatisfying.

The risk of course is that people who don't play every game get unlucky and end up on the defeats!

I'm also happy to be harsher... (obviously it's something that all 3 refs need to agree on per dungeon)

There is almost always a choice to be made on my dungeons (all those run with Fraser or Shaun) with either short/long-term consequences. Parties are or will be starting to feel the effects of some of those choices made in the last year or two...

Maybe Erf you should come along to The Opening Move (Pete's HQ in May) - fancy a white chess piece to replace the black one
