Cheers to everyone who made the weekend great - I had a blast

best bits - the "brown zone" and Kevralyn having to retreat from said brown zone to sneer from the treeline - chickens and ducks

the Xenos fight was classic & the fact that Sarah didn't spot where the Halts, Flashes and Powerhammers were coming from

The trial and John Barleycorn ace lawyer for the prosecution

bad bits

brrrrrrrrr
poor Matt

will post a couple of threads on the rules section for the playtested rules

Cheerzen

Great event.

Fav bit:
The Dymwan fight, then puking on whoever came near as my very poorly dymwan, listening to the discussions on who was going to kill me waiting for the fun to burst out as soon as you did.

Worst bit:
Lying by a tree for ages and ages in the cold after that, only to realise the footfalls and voices i could hear were Alex and Logan in my yurt.

Could tell you all hated the Stone Panther panthers, you hit twice as hard against them :-P

Maybe see you all next event.

Thank you to Fraser, Pete and all the monsters who turned up to give us a good beating over the last 3 days!

Hope Matt gets better soon

Sky I'm sorry we took out your big NPC before you had any chance to use any of your stats, come and crew for me over Easter and I'll see what we can do to make up for it

We were obviously pushed as I not only used all my 1/event items but a number of one-off/charged ones too!

Fights I particularly enjoyed: the Dymwan temporary camp (esp. walking through the ward of Death, and fighting the evil elemental of doom), the geomancer (and the resounding chorus of "My protections aid me!" when he cast an Earthquake), the two night-time ones at the shrine and the final one where Simian turned up as the Oracle of the North Wind.

Also I enjoyed the diplomacy (especially where the Shadowsfall unexpectedly turned up!), trial (I think Phil has watched lots of courtroom dramas), and whenever spicciness reared its ugly head (thanks Pete)

Memorable moments:

Fraser's LoX Ambassadorial and Facilitation Unit, plenty of good quotes from him, including "this does not match our description of that individual" when Maggot pretended his gauntlet was called King Paullandiss

Alex S's bloke torturing Simian while everyone else waited outside, someone saying we should stop the screaming and getting to reply "no - while he's screaming we know he's alive"

Numerous humourous quotes from the half-orc/Caradac contingent ("why does darkness always come forth? why not third or second?" it's off the podium" ) while Shard/I were casting although I did enjoy this exchange:
Kevralyn (casting black wizardry): "for I have seen the darkness, I have travelled to the void, I have been upon the Plane of Shadows..."
Shard (while casting): "Starlight please take Kevralyn somewhere nicer on holiday"

Chioma hamming up his diseased Dymwan. Gutrot our resident torturer going "which finger shall I cut off first?" and Maggot & I simultaneously replying "the thumb!"

After Investigator Petris (I notice Maggot didn't try using the other name) left having questioned Maggot, Caradac saying "there were two games going on there... one person there was playing chess, the other was playing draughts... or noughts and crosses"

Fraser, while I appreciate the efforts you went to to physrep the Icy North Wind, I believe I can safely speak for more than just myself in saying we would have been quite happy if there had been a mild warm breeze and we were only obliged to role-play the burning cold that steals the very warmth from your blood & bones. I don't think I've ever been so cold on an event before!

I had a whale of a time on my first outing for, er, too long.

Thanks to the monster crew for sitting around in the cold while we had to straight cast Cure 8 between every encounter.

Thanks to Shaun for sitting around to straight cast Cure 8 between every encounter.

The reffing was pretty good. Except for Pete blatantly sipping on a mug of tea wile the party were being panelled in the freezing cold. Good varied event with plenty of plot for those who cared and plenty of moshes for those who didn't...

Thanks to Sarah for being a good sport about the bashing she took both in-character from Caradac and physically from Mike. Oops.

Far too many good bits to pick out but it was great to refresh so many old friendships and to make a few new ones as well.

I'll be back next month, if only for the excellent food.

Mike - since this was a point you also raised in the debrief (in a joking manner) and I can't tell if its tongue in cheek (as no tone in text) can you explain more why it is poor reffing?

It was freezing at the time and I was trying to raise my core temperature - are you therefore implying that roleplaying over comfort/safety is preferable? (and I'd also argue that it really wasn't out of character for a wolfhold guide)

Mostly tongue-in-cheek.

It's also partly the perennial problem of the NPC Player Ref. The event is for the players benefit so they must be the architects of their own success/failure. And that means that the Player Ref mustn't influence the outcome.

The jarring disconnect is that, unless some special mechanism is in play, the unerring ability of the monsters to ignore one person in a group just kinda works against suspension of disbelief.

I don't have a big problem with it and I don't see a good solution either. I do think that player refs are a very good idea, though.

Ah but in my mind - although its not formalised (and therefore needs to be) certain people get a "Neutrality against everything" invocation cast on them and similar to the Befriend and existing Neutrality to X skills/invocations/abilities etc it also makes you neutral to everything & therefore its pointless to carry a weapon

The Valley obviously uses this on its guides - these guides are therefore mostly ignored - they facilitate getting groups into dangerous areas but neither help nor hinder them unduly when in that area apart from showing them the way to go...

oh and this is the aim for many of the rule "changes" we're going to do - its formalising whats already done where the rules are not being applied for pragmatic reasons (its too hard to keep track of bleeding so no-one does it) or where there are unwritten rules that are always applied but in conflict to what it says in the rules (like the spell duration rule)

there are then a class of rules we're looking at to bring some parity into the system but perhaps this is a post for another time and in the rules section...

Have a care. That could have a major impact on all sorts of other things...
